DETOUR featured at Orio Litta conference on opportunities of walking routes
The European project DETOUR was featured at the conference “La Via Francigena nel Lodigiano: a road connecting past and future”, held on 11–12 October 2025 in Orio Litta (Lombardy, Italy). The event, organised by the European Association of the Via Francigena (AEVF) with the support of Lombardy Region, brought together institutional representatives, experts, and local communities to explore the cultural, social, and economic value of the cultural itinerary of Via Francigena, particularly in the context of Catholic Jubilee 2025.
The conference highlighted the role of rural areas and local communities as engines of culture, social exchange, and sustainable development. Orio Litta, which welcomes hundreds of pilgrims along the Via Francigena every year, served as a clear example of how walking routes can generate economic, cultural, and social opportunities for local communities.
Throughout the event, discussions focused on the future of the Via Francigena as a living, inclusive network, encompassing public institutions, universities, schools, associations, research centers, and businesses. Participants emphasized the importance of making walking routes accessible to everyone, highlighting initiatives that promote inclusivity along European cultural paths.
DETOUR was showcased as a key initiative supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) along the Via Francigena and other cultural routes. By providing training, funding, and strategic support, the project aims to foster entrepreneurship and sustainable local development, strengthening the economic and social fabric of the territories it crosses.
The conference also reinforced the vision of the Via Francigena as a dynamic and inclusive network that connects history, culture, and innovation. Through projects like DETOUR, walking routes across Europe continue to promote sustainable development, local entrepreneurship, and accessible experiences for all.
