Sultan's Trail

The Sultan’s Trail in Bulgaria is part of a long-distance cultural hiking route that follows the path of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent from Istanbul to Vienna. In Bulgaria, the trail crosses scenic mountains, forests, and rural landscapes, connecting historic towns and cultural landmarks. Hikers can explore monasteries, Ottoman-era bridges, and traditional Bulgarian villages. It’s a peaceful journey through nature, history, and intercultural heritage. The trail promotes sustainable tourism and cross-border connection.The full route of the Sultan’s Trail passes through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, East Macedonia and Thrace in northern Greece, and Türkiye. Within Bulgaria, the DETOUR pilot area focuses specifically on the Thrace Tourist Region, covering approximately 9,800 square kilometers. This area serves as a key section for testing and promoting innovative sustainable tourism practices along the trail.

The Via Francigena

The Via Francigena in Italy is an ancient pilgrimage route that crosses the country from the Alps to Rome, continuing south to Santa Maria di Leuca. Stretching over 1,000 km within Italy, it passes through breathtaking landscapes, medieval towns, and cultural landmarks, offering a unique journey through Italy’s history, spirituality, and natural beauty. The Italian section is part of the entire Via Francigena route, recognized as an official Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, which extends for approximately 3,200 km from Canterbury (UK) to Rome and on to Santa Maria di Leuca.
