DETOUR launches SME training activities along the Via Francigena in Fidenza and Rome
In the framework of DETOUR SME Training programme (January - April 2026), the European Association of the Via Francigena organised two in-person training events for selected small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on 25 February in Fidenza and on 27 February in Rome.
The first meeting took place at the Teatro di Fidenza, hosted by the project coordinator - Municipality of Fidenza, and served as the kick-off of the SME training programme. Tourism businesses from Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Veneto, Lombardy and Piedmont came together to learn about the DETOUR training and mentoring methodology, discuss the EU Transition Pathways for Tourism, and explore networking opportunities for future collaboration.
The second kick-off event was hosted by Roma Tre University (Department of Education) together with ESCO, and served as a mirror event to the meeting in Fidenza. It brought together tourism SMEs from Lazio and Tuscany to launch the training pathway, present DETOUR’s objectives and mentoring approach, and discuss European strategies for the green and digital transition of tourism. The programme also highlighted networking opportunities and introduced the upcoming collaborative project call, expected in mid-March, which will provide financial opportunities for collaborative projects.
From mid-March, SMEs will be able to apply for grants ranging from €15,000 to €25,000, covering 100% of eligible costs. Through training, mentoring and financial support, DETOUR aims to build a resilient and innovative tourism ecosystem along the Via Francigena (Pavia–Rome pilot section), while fostering international cooperation among Italy, Greece, Bulgaria and Türkiye. The project proposes a scalable model to strengthen SMEs and promote sustainable development across European cultural routes.
