Mount Olympus inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List! Another step toward the protection and sustainable promotion of Greece's unique natural trails
On 26 July 2026, Mount Olympus was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, marking a historic moment for Greece. This designation recognizes its unique natural and cultural value.
This distinction takes on even greater significance for the DETOUR Project, as Mount Olympus, Kissavos, and Mavrovouni constitute the project's Greek pilot area, intending to develop resilient and sustainable tourism ecosystems along the Mediterranean hiking trails.
At the Mediterranean Centre of Environment, we are particularly proud to participate in an initiative that contributes to the protection, promotion, and sustainable development of a region with such significant natural and cultural heritage.
This recognition by UNESCO confirms that nature conservation, cultural heritage preservation, and sustainable tourism development can go hand in hand, creating new opportunities for local communities and future generations.
Congratulations to everyone who contributed to this great achievement!
